Andy Coulson Resigns

It has just been announced that Downing Street director of communications, Andy Coulson, has resigned. This should come as no surprise, as with mounting pressure on Coulson over the ongoing News of the World phone hacking scandal it could only have been a matter of time.

David Cameron’s attempt on the other hand to ignore the pressure being placed on him to end his support for his spin doctor calls into question his judgment, not to mention the influence of Rupert Murdoch and his top executives over Number Ten. Cameron and his wife are known to be close personal friends of News International’s chief executive, Rebekah Brooks, with whom they frequently socialise, and Murdoch’s decision to shift the support of his newspapers from Labour to the Tories at the last election had a huge bearing on Cameron’s victory.

Cynically, today’s announcement has clearly been timed to coincide with Blair’s second appearance a the Chilcot Inquiry in an attempt to lessen its impact, though it is unlikely to succeed.

Meanwhile, the phone hacking scandal continues to unravel, with News International facing multiple high profile legal actions; those being brought by George Galloway and Tommy Sheridan chief among them.

Coulson’s only appearance thus far in court to answer questions on his role in the phone hacking affair came last month, when he was cited to appear by Tommy Sheridan during his trial for perjury.

Coulson’s resignation comes as bad news for the Tories but good news for democracy.
